School district saves money and helps the environment by converting 8 buses to natural gas with NGV Motori
WHAT: In 2014 the Rose Tree Media School District embarked on a CNG (compressed natural gas) project to convert a portion of its fleet of 74 buses from diesel to CNG. The projected cost savings for the CNG project over 12 years are approximately $1 million. In addition to 8 bus conversions, a fast-fill CNG station was installed at the District. On Friday, December 12 at 10 AM the District will be conducting a ribbon cutting to launch the station and CNG bus fleet.
Through the conversion of 8 buses, the District was able to repurpose and extend the life of those buses and keep them out of the salvage yard. NGV Motori replaced the VT 365 diesel engines in the busses with the NGV Motori EPA certified DT 466 CNG engine.
The District has received positive feedback from the community because CNG buses are cleaner and quieter. The project has reduced emissions that are equivalent to CO2 emissions from 346 passenger vehicles and 4,206 barrels of oil.
The abundance of shale gas available in Pennsylvania is expected to keep natural gas prices low for decades. Use of natural gas also reduces the country’s reliance on foreign oil.
“The CNG conversion project will certainly save the District on fuel costs, but to be honest, the administration sees the project as a conscience effort to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Jim Wigo, Sr., Superintendent of Schools, Rose Tree Media School District. “Our bus fleet covers a million miles per year, and we expect the savings, both in dollars and emissions, to be significant. We feel that we owe these considerations to our community.”
“Replacing these engines was quite an engineering feat,” said Sunny DeWakar,
CEO, NGV Motori, USA. “We were able to successfully execute the project of replacing the diesel engines with CNG DT 466 engines while ensuring that all the other functions of the bus could be engineered to work properly.
“We are excited about Rose Tree Media School District’s decision to proceed with their school bus conversion to natural gas,” said Tony Bandiero, Director, Greater Philadelphia Clean Cities. “We have supported this project from the onset, and we appreciate the fortitude and leadership they have shown by beginning to convert to utilize CNG as a motor fuel.”
